SFC fuel cell ensures 100% early fire detection system security
Brunnthal, August 04, 2005 – Since June 2005, fire watch
towers in Brandenburg, Germany, are being equipped with
the innovative fuel cells of SFC, the world’s leading
manufacturer of fuel cells for mobile use. In this project the
SFC A50 fuel cell is integrated into a 220 Wp PV system to
ensure that the cameras, which in sunny weather are being
operated by a solar cell, will also work reliably in bad
weather or in winter.

The Automatic Early Warning System for Forest Fires “Firewatch” has been developed by IQ wireless GmbH, Berlin, Germany. In it, a camera installed on a fire watch tower rotates once every eight minutes, thereby continuously recording a 360° panorama of the surrounding forests. When the system’s innovative image processing software – a DLR (German Aerospace – Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V.) development – identifies a trail of smoke, the smoke’s bearing and distance are immediately transmitted to the wood fire control station. The station is then able to analyze the situation visually. The adoption of “Firewatch” has led to considerable cost savings, as the system takes over surveillance tasks which in the past had to be performed by the rangers – sometimes in extremely hot temperatures – thus freeing the rangers for their actual forestry tasks.

Brandenburg is one of the areas with the highest fire danger ratings in Europe.
Since the installation of our early fire detection system, the number of fires obviously has not gone down, but the damage caused by those fires has been considerably reduced, thanks to the early detection“, says Holger Vogel, Vice President of IQ

As several of the fire watch towers, due to their location, have to rely on off-grid power supplies, IQ wireless uses a PV remote system combined with fuel cells to ensure 100% availability of the early detection system in any weather.

„This project with IQ wireless clearly demonstrates the big potential of SFC A50 fuel cells in PV powered projects, where 100 percent power availability is of utmost importance. There is no such thing as bad weather for a fuel cell - it will always jump in reliably whenever the solar system will not provide enough power due to a lack of solar radiation“, says Michael Gruber, Area Manager Industrial Applications at SFC.

Successful technology cooperation between Hymer and SFC

Bad Waldsee, July 7, 2005 – Europe’s leading motorhome manufacturer, Hymer AG, Bad Waldsee, Germany, announces the standard integration of a fuel cell for providing an autonomous energy supply into their Hymermobile S-Class. The fuel cell used is the SFC A50 by SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG, Brunnthal, Germany. This public world premiere is the result of a three-year cooperation between Hymer and SFC.
Starting September 2005, the SFC A50 will be integrated as standard equipment in the S-Class, Hymer’s premium line, to ensure full mains independence. Even in the winter half of the year, the fuel cell provides unlimited independence, while eliminating unpleasant noise and exhaust fumes. “This unique selling proposition clearly creates additional value for the S-Class”, says Hans-Juergen Burkert, Chief Sales & Finance Officer at Hymer AG. For the B-Class and the B-StarLine Hymer offers the SFC A50 as optional equipment ex works.
In the framework of the development much effort was made to optimize costs of the fuel cell and the associated fuel cartridges. “Having achieved a breakthrough in technological development we are pleased to now offer the SFC A50 for only EUR 2,999.- “, says Pieter Bots, Chief Sales & Marketing Officer at SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG. „The unique combination of being environmentally friendly, highly reliable and providing ultimate comfort makes this device the predestined source of energy for mobile leisure applications“, he continues.
The SFC A50 is fuelled by liquid methanol, which is supplied from 5 l fuel cartridges. Thanks to an integrated charge control the device automatically recharges the battery of the motor home. Whenever the battery voltage decreases below 12.5 V that device is automatically switched on to recharge the batteries. Depending on individual consumption the SFC A50 supplies up to 100 Ah into the consumer batteries. With a single fuel cartridge the SFC A50 provides between five to ten days of complete mains independence, depending on the season and individual consumption. The fuel cartridge price, too, has been considerably reduced to now only EUR 19.90 per cartridge.
Hymer is the world’s first manufacturer of motorhomes to offer fuel cells as standard equipment. „With the introduction of this revolutionary technology we have again demonstrated our technological leadership“, says Burkert and stresses that Hymer has always put a strong focus on using innovative and environmentally friendly technologies. SFC to develop portable fuel cells for German Federal Army

Brunnthal, August 03, 2005 SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG, the worlds leading manufacturer of fuel cells for mobile use, today announced a cooperation programme with the German Federal Armys Military Vehicle and Tank Technology Department WTD 41. Under this programme, SFC is to develop a next generation portable fuel cell as power supply for soldiers in the field. The objective is to increase their tactical operating range. As a result of the programme, weight and size of a soldiers equipment will be significantly reduced compared to existing, battery based solutions, while at the same time increasing the amount of available electrical energy.
Soldiers today must carry a weight of up to 40 kg (88 pounds) in mission relevant equipment, in some cases even more. This weight is mainly caused by electrical devices, e.g. communication systems or sensors and the batteries required running them. Also, the number of electrical devices needing electrical energy is continuously growing.
This situation dramatically increases the need for a significantly smaller, lighter and more economical mobile power source. Realizing this objective is the main focus of the development programme.
SFCs current solution, the SFC C20, already offers a significant improvement over even the most advanced and much more expensive batteries, as a weight comparison of alternative power supply solutions for a typical three day mission, needing an average of 20 watts of electrical power, shows:
In case of rechargeable, secondary batteries, a soldier typically has to carry 12.6 kg (27.8 pounds) of battery weight. Much more expensive primary batteries that have to be thrown away after usage, still weigh a substantial 9.3 kg. (20.5 pounds). Todays SFC C20 however, weighs in at only 3.3 kg. (7.3 pounds), including the fuel.
This comparison clearly shows the already impressive weight savings the current model, the SFC C20, has to offer.
Under the programme, the weight of the new DMFC product, SFCs C20-II, will again be significantly reduced to an extremely low 2.2 kg (4.9 pounds). Thus reducing the soldiers weight burden to approximately one sixth of the weight of rechargeable batteries and to one fourth of the weight of primary batteries!
In addition, the new product will benefit from SFCs class leading competence in the areas of design, silent and vibration-free operation and reliability, much like SFCs line of commercial fuel cells.
The product will also contribute to a considerable reduction of operating and logistic costs, as the cost of consumables is extremely low compared with batteries. Furthermore, the fuel cell will eliminate the need to discard partially discharged batteries as well as minimize transportation and logistics costs. The new product will work reliably even at very high or low ambient temperatures and will be robust, shock resistant, and waterproof.
As a result of the programme, the new generation SFC C20-II will be used with existing equipment and become the standard power supply for the soldier of the future. E.g. in the IdZ Infantryman of the Future (Infanterist der Zukunft) project of the German Federal Army. The SFC C20-II is able to either directly feed electrical devices or to recharge secondary batteries. The development of the new product is expected to be finalized by the end of this year. The German Federal Army will do lab and field testing of the product in real operating conditions and compare the results with battery based solutions. The objective is to make the fuel cell fully ready for use by the army as soon as possible.

Automatic Battery Charger (ABC)
The ABC is a 100W portable fuel cell system packaged so that it is easy to carry and use anywhere, even underground. It is available in two different AC voltages; either 110V or 230V and both variants have both a 12VDC output and a USB charging port. This system can be used to power small portable devices such as IPODs or mobile phones or to simply recharge any battery. It is fully integrated for convenience and it boasts a frost sensor which enables the user to use it in below freezing conditions. The ABC has a serial port. The RBC is a Rack Mount 100W, 12VDC only fuel cell system designed for keeping batteries automatically topped up in remote locations. This could be powering monitoring, surveillance, communications or other similar equipment, where batteries are already being used to supply power – what this system does is extend the runtime of your equipment and make your visits to swap over the batteries less frequent. Like the ABC, this system has a serial port which can be used to diagnose the system performance, giving information about how much fuel there is left based on how the system has been used and it can be configured to do this remotely. The ABC is flexible in that it can run on either an internal metal hydride canister or an external hydrogen cylinder, available from your local hydrogen gas supplier – as long as there is fuel being supplied to it, the RBC will continue working. It can also work in conjunction with other renewable power sources such as wind turbines and solar cells to provide the optimum power solution.

The Battery Box was designed specifically for recharging batteries in power tools, in locations where there is no mains power, either using the AC output or the 12VDC output. However, it could be used to supply up to 300W of mains power, in a number of different applications, for periods of time depending upon the load being applied. Fuel Cartridge

Safe and Economical - All IQ fuel cells operate with IQ fuel cartridges, the safest and most convenient way to power the cell. The cartridges are easy to obtain from IQ and they bear the approval of Germany’s technical standards body. Methanol’s extraordinarily high energy density means that it is possible to generate more than 600 Ah of electricity with a single M10 10-liter cartridge. Larger containers are available upon request. It’s the safe, convenient solution.

Practical and Convenient - Simply screw it onto the IQ fuel cell and throw the switch; that’s all there is to it. The built-in safety valve prevents methanol from escaping, making the approved fuel cartridges safe and easy to use. It’s even possible to change fuel cartridges during operation within seconds.

Light and Easy to Handle - An M10 fuel cartridge weighs only 8.2 Kg but it can furnish more than 600 Ah of electricity. A comparable lead battery would weigh about 200 Kg. This advantage quickly becomes apparent in extremely remote locations. Larger fuel cartridges are available upon request.

Available anywhere in the world by air freight - IQ fuel cartridges are manufactured using UN-certified safety standards for containers. IQ has an official permit from IATA (International Air Transport Association) to send IQ fuel cartridges by plane. The IQ Fuel Cartridge

TÜV-approved - All IQ fuel cartridges come with TÜV-Product-Service’s seal of approval. IQ fuel cartridges were designed to the highest safety standards right from the start. For the containers, we chose a particularly impact-resistant material. All IQ fuel cartridges are equipped with a specially designed safety valve.

Safety Valve - All IQ fuel cartridges are fitted with a safety valve to prevent methanol from escaping. It only opens if the cartridge is connected to an IQ fuel cell. Removing the cartridge reseals the valve hermetically, preventing users from ever coming into contact with methanol. It’s a lot safer, cleaner and easier way to refuel than filling gasoline-powered generators.
 

Methanol - an environmentally friendly fuel

Methanol is an environmentally friendly fuel that also occurs in nature. It is water soluble and biodegradable. The approved fuel cartridges may be transported and stored anywhere so there are no unpleasant odors to spoil your vacation.

In contrast to hydrogen, which needs to be stored at high pressure, methanol comes in easy-to-use, rugged safety containers. Methanol is a liquid and is therefore safe, easy, and economic to handle. Its extraordinarily high energy density allows IQ fuel cells to operate a very long time at minimal weight and volume.

IQ fuel cartridges are available anywhere in the world and may be sent via air-freight, something that is currently unthinkable for fuels such as hydrogen.

All these properties combine to make methanol the ideal fuel.
 

Why Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFC)?

For mobile applications, so called "Low Temperature Fuel Cells" are the most suitable fuel cells, since their operating temperature is rather low. The main fuel cells in this category are the hydrogen and the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). IQ has made a clear decision for the DMFC because methanol is a safe and inexpensive fuel for fuel cells.

Hydrogen is normally stored in heavy and bulky metal hydride cartridges which are expensive to manufacture and refill. The content of such cartridges lasts only for a short time and the transport of hydrogen is subject to very strict restrictions.

Methanol is distributed in safe and easy to handle fuel cartridges. The fuel cartridges can be changed in seconds, even during operation (hot-swap). Therefore recharging time, such as with batteries, is completely eliminated, and uninterrupted operation is now possible.

The IQ fuel cartridges are equipped with a safety valve which prevents the spillage of methanol, thereby protecting the user from contact with methanol. All IQ fuel cartridges are certified by the TUEV (leading German authority) as “verified safety” for consumer use.
 

Mode of operation

All IQ fuel cells are direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC):

On the anode side, a methanol-water mixture is supplied to the cell by the internal fluid management. One of IQ's unique capabilities is the use of neat (100%) methanol as the fuel in the cartridge. The cathode side is supplied with air. Both, the anode and the cathode are connected through an electric circuit. In contact with the platinum catalyst  methanol is converted into carbon dioxide (waste gas), protons and electrons.  The electrons circulate from the anode side to the cathode via the electric circuit, while the protons pass through the membrane which divides the cell. On the cathode side, the protons, electrons, and the oxygen react to form pure water.

Due to the heating of the fuel cell while operating the evolving water is emitted as water vapor. Another by-product is a small amount of carbon dioxide. The overall amount of by-products equals the respiratory exhalation of a small child while playing.
